What is Drive Smart Florida?
Drive Smart Florida is an education provider offering state-aligned driving-related courses, including the TLSAE (Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education) and DETS (Drug Education and Traffic Safety) programs. We help new drivers meet legal requirements and develop safe driving habits.
Drive Smart Florida is currently under evaluation by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) for official approval of its TLSAE and DETS programs. We are actively working with the appropriate state agencies to ensure full compliance and expect approval soon. As of now, the course materials meet all outlined educational requirements and are designed in alignment with Florida state standards.

Our programs are designed for:
– First-time Florida driver’s license applicants (TLSAE)
– Individuals required to take court-ordered traffic or drug education (DETS)
– Teen drivers, parents, and others seeking driving safety awareness

TLSAE – Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education

What is TLSAE?
TLSAE is a four-hour course required by the FLHSMV for all first-time driver’s license applicants in Florida. It teaches traffic laws, the risks of alcohol/drug use, and safe driving habits.
Anyone getting their first driver’s license in Florida — regardless of age — must complete TLSAE.
It is a 4-hour course, broken into 9 modules with interactive content, quizzes, and a final exam.
Yes. You can take the course online at your own pace from any device.
Yes. Upon passing the final exam, your completion is electronically reported to the FLHSMV and you will also receive a digital certificate for your records.

Yes. TLSAE is required before you can take your learner’s permit exam, but it is a separate test.

DETS – Drug Education and Traffic Safety Course

What is DETS?
DETS is a court-approved course designed for individuals who have been cited for drug or substance-related traffic offenses. It combines drug education with traffic safety awareness.

You may be required to take DETS if:
– You received a DUI or other drug-related traffic citation
– A court or judge ordered you to complete a substance abuse traffic course

No. While both cover substance abuse and driving safety, DETS is typically a longer, more in-depth course used for court-mandated or rehabilitative purposes.
Length may vary, but it is often 8–12 hours, depending on your court order and situation.
Yes. A certificate of completion will be provided and can be sent directly to the court if required.
